INDIGENOUS MS PEER SUPPORT GROUP
WHAT IS MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS?
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease of impaired nerve signaling within a person’s brain and spinal cord. The variable symptoms of MS—fatigue, pain, walking difficulties, vision problems, and more—can be socially isolating and interfere with daily functioning.
As American Indians, we struggle with what doctors want us to do as patients and what our culture and traditions have taught us. This can be anything from disease modifying medications to traditional ceremonies. Together, we can support one another with how each one of us approaches these challenges.
OUR ADVOCATES
This is Cola and NaTika. They are sisters living in Spokane, WA and are members of the Shoshone Bannock Tribes from Fort Hall, ID.
Cola was diagnosed in 2009 but started experiencing symptoms as a freshman in college. Now at the lively age of 35, she has a lot of ways that she combats flare-ups, stress and challenges.
NaTika is a wifey and mommy of three. She was diagnosed in 2019 during her pregnancy with her youngest child. Her story is surrounded by what she has done to find an equality with living stress free, and combat this disease between her health and her family.

Our Goal and Mission
Our goal is to support and connect with other Indigenous patients who suffer from Multiple Sclerosis. We want to be a group who can support one another in the challenges and successes that each one of us faces as Indigenous people.
Our mission is to be able to come together as a group of people to support each other. In the future, I would like to be able to travel to each one of our indigenous patients and walk with them at their MS walk, visit them in thier communities, and speak to other tribal people and nations on the awareness of Multiple Sclerosis.
